A really early example of an eighteenth century six string instrument fretted with ivory. Chappuy died in 1784 so this may well be one of the earliest six string guitars in existence. The label states Augustinus Chappuy fecit Parisiis Anno 17-- the years were either not inked in or have faded with time. Although it is of slimmer profile than earlier instruments of the eighteenth century, the overall body shape is more akin to the less waisted baroque instruments than later nineteenth century French instruments. It is also surprisingly light. Condition is completely original with only very minimal restoration. As is often the case with instruments of this age, the bridge is probably a later replacement. The sound comes forth very readily and it has a lovely clarity and warmth. Playability is absolutely fine.
