Teodoro Perez Maestro Especial South American/Cedar 2007
Back and Sides South American Rosewood
Width at nut 51.5 mm
Scale length 65 cm
Teodoro Gregorio Perez was part of the team of great luthiers at the workshop of Jose Ramirez III in the 1960s and continued to work there for twenty-six years. A highly successful partnership with Mariano Tezanos followed, after which the two luthiers went their separate ways. The workmanship on Teodoro's instruments is outstanding, and their tone is characteristic of the very best work of the Madrid luthiers.
This lovely 2007 example is the top model from Perez' range, with a sound and appearance to suit. The delicacy of detailed craftsmanship in the rosette and purfling is quite astonishing and looks like it was put together under a magnifying glass. Condition is excellent - being French-polished there are some playing marks in the top, but no cracks or repairs.
This is a very powerful instrument, with a treble that is vibrant and penetrating but without compromising on warmth or colour of tone. The openness of the sound allows for a responsiveness in timbre when playing at a low volume, too, allowing for an impressive range of possibilities in shaping dynamics and tone.
I am really pleased with the 4E you sold me last Friday. Thanks for your kind attention over several hours (and the tea !!)
