This magnificent Contreras Double Top concert instrument has all the richness and warmth the Madrid school is famous for, backed by a powerful projection and volume. It is capable of a very wide range of timbre; the bright treble has a solid roundness, complementing a bass which is lively and punchy without being overbearing.
The overall impression is clarity without brashness, warmth without muddiness, and a wide colour palette without tonal imbalance.
Remarkably for its age, it is in almost as-new condition, there being no cracks, repairs or indeed any obvious marks except for a soundboard string ding under the ‘g’ (under the bridge, it is visible in the photograph just to the right of the centre seam).
The original tuning machines, which had developed cracks in their rollers, have been replaced with newer ones of the same quality (also Fustero).
